Development of herbicide-tolerant irrigated rice cultivars PAB
Rangel,Paulo Hideo Nakano; Moura Neto,Francisco Pereira; Fagundes,Paulo Ricardo Reis; Magalhães Junior,Ariano Martins de; Morais,Orlando Peixoto de; Schmidt,Andréa Branco; Mendonça,João Antônio; Santiago,Carlos Martins; Rangel,Priscila Nascimento; Cutrim,Veridiano dos Anjos; Ferreira,Márcio Elias.
The objective of this work was to develop new irrigated rice lines tolerant to imidazolinone herbicides. The backcross breeding procedure was used to transfer the imidazolinone tolerance allele from mutant 93AS3510 to the recurrent parents 'BRS 7 Taim' and 'BRS Pelota'. Individual herbicide-tolerant plants were selected in each generation, for three backcrossings (RC1 to RC3), followed by three selfing generations (RC3F1 to RC3F3). The best four RC3F3 lines for agronomic traits were genotyped with 44 microsatellite markers. The observed conversion index of the new imidazolinone-tolerant lines varied from 91.86 to 97.67%. Pairwise genetic distance analysis between these lines and 22 accessions from the Embrapa's Rice Germplasm Bank clustered the new lines...

Genotypic performance, adaptability and stability in special types of irrigated rice using mixed models Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Streck,Eduardo Anibele; Magalhães Júnior,Ariano Martins de; Aguiar,Gabriel Almeida; Facchinello,Paulo Henrique Karling; Fagundes,Paulo Ricardo Reis.
ABSTRACT There is an increasing demand for special types of rice that have black or red pericarp, low amylose (subspecie japonica) or aromatic. However, intense breeding process for obtaining and indicating genetically promising new cultivars and adapted to cultivation environments are demanded. In this sense, for evaluating the special types of irrigated rice genotypes, and determining the adaptability and stability of these using mixed models. First, a preliminary agronomic evaluation of genotypes for special types of irrigated rice was performed, and later, the agronomically promising genotypes were evaluated in multi-site trials, aiming at verifying the interactions with the environment. Statistical analyzes were performed considering mixed models,...

Market Impacts of Adopting Herbicide-Resistant Rice in the Southern United States AgEcon
Fuller, Frank H.; Annou, Mamane Malam; Wailes, Eric J..
Herbicide-resistant (HR) rice varieties offer U.S. rice producers a powerful tool for control of red rice infestations. However, improved weed control can shorten crop rotations and boost yields, resulting in expanded rice production and lower domestic market prices. Declining market returns diminish the benefits of HR rice adoption and substantially reduce net returns for nonadopters. More competitive prices increase U.S. rice exports, causing a slight decline in world rice prices. The dependence of the rice marketing loan program on world prices prevents loan deficiency payments from adequately offsetting producers’ market revenue losses. U.S. consumers gain from lower rice prices.

One-step, codominant detection of imidazolinone resistance mutations in weedy rice (Oryza sativa L.) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rosas,Juan E; Bonnecarrère,Victoria; Pérez de Vida,Fernando.
Background Weedy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a noxious form of cultivated rice (O. sativa L.) associated with intensive rice production and dry seeding. A cost-efficient strategy to control this weed is the Clearfield rice production system, which combines imidazolinone herbicides with mutant imidazolinone-resistant rice varieties. However, imidazolinone resistance mutations can be introgressed in weedy rice populations by natural outcrossing, reducing the life span of the Clearfield technology. Timely and accurate detection of imidazolinone resistance mutations in weedy rice may contribute to avoiding the multiplication and dispersion of resistant weeds and to protect the Clearfield system. Thus, highly sensitive and specific methods with high throughput...

Seed longevity of red rice ecotypes buried in soil Planta Daninha
Noldin,J.A.; Chandler,J.M.; McCauley,G.N..
Red rice is a troublesome weed in irrigated rice production and is spread through contaminated commercial rice seed and machinery. Seed dormancy is a major trait for red rice. Studies were carried out at two locations to determine red rice seed longevity in the soil of several ecotypes from four US states. Five months after burial near Beaumont, Texas only three ecotypes had viable seed (<1%) when buried at 5 cm, but 9 ecotypes had viable seed after two years when buried at 25 cm. At the thirty-sixth month after burial, ecotypes Arkansas 2, Louisiana 2 and 4, Mississippi 4 and Texas 1 had viable seeds, but at less than 1%. Freshly harvested red rice seeds buried at 12 cm near College Station, TX, survived longer than seeds placed on the soil surface....

Sensitivity of weedy rice populations to Quizalofop Planta Daninha
M. Oliveira Neto,Antonio; Guerra,Naiara; Coffin,Maxwell; R. Burgos,Nilda; de Andrade,Alexander; Noldin,José A..
Abstract Background: Rice lines displaying resistance to quizalofop-p-ethyl (quizalofop), an acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicide, were developed to facilitate control of imidazolinone-resistant weedy rice (red rice), as well as other susceptible grasses. Objective: To assess the sensitivity of weedy rice accessions from Brazil to quizalofop. Methods: Two bioassays were conducted on the greenhouse from March to June 2016, in a completely random design with a two-factor factorial combination of treatments and four replications. The factor A was weedy rice accession and factor B was quizalofop rates (0, 25 and 50 g a.i. ha-1). It was assessed a total of 84 genotypes in the two bioassays, composed of 78 weedy rice accessions, 4...

Vegetative and reproductive development of Costa Rican weedy rice compared with commercial rice (Oryza sativa) Planta Daninha
Sánchez-Olquín,E.; Arrieta-Espinoza,G.; Espinoza Esquivel,A.M..
The variability in the chronology of the vegetative and reproductive development of weedy rice complex has been little studied. However, a field trial was established to study the timing of growth stages of sixteen weedy rice morphotypes and five rice varieties of Costa Rica. Weedy rice presented a wide range of variation for all descriptors among and within morphotypes. Weedy rice was taller than the rice varieties during vegetative phase and showed a growth increase of 14-23 cm every two weeks. Six morphotypes emerged earlier than commercial rice varieties, but no differences where found between samples for the time required for starting tillering. Early emergence of weedy rice morphotypes was not associated with early flowering, thus no correlation was...

Weed phytosociological in irrigated rice under different cultivation systems and crop rotation intensity Ciência Rural
Ulguim,André da Rosa; Carlos,Filipe Selau; Santos,Rodrigo Areze da Silva; Zanon,Alencar Junior; Werle,Isabel Schlegel; Beck,Mattheus.
ABSTRACT: This research aimed to evaluate the phytosociology of weeds in irrigated rice in different soil management systems and crop rotation intensity. Therefore, two field studies were carried out. Study 1 was conducted in an area that has been cultivated since 1994 with three cultivation systems: direct, pre-germinated and conventional ones. Study 2 was carried out in an experimental area in five Integrated Farming Systems, with crop rotation. Phytosociological evaluations were conducted when rice was fully blooming, in the first study, and when grain filling was ending, in the second study. Pre-germinated system of rice cultivation has predominance of aquatic weeds. Conventional system when compared with direct sowing has lower weed densities....

Acylated Steryl Glucosides (ASGs) are unsaponified matters that are ubiquitously distributed in edible plant sources, for example barley, maize and brown rice. ASGs in pre-germinated brown rice have reported to improve insulin activity and blood glucose control mechanisms in the diabetic condition through the activation of insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and increasing of IGF-1 production. Recently, the medical studies confirm that dietary intake of brown and pre-germinated brown rice is useful for alleviating symptoms of both diabetes and pre-diabetes. To improve the functional dietary intake of Thai rice, identification of ASGs in seven varieties, namely: Khao Dawk Mali 105, PTT1, RD31, Sang Yod, RD6, Niaw Dam Chum Pae and Niaw Dam Maw, brown and...
